Gill set to miss Perth Test after injuring his thumb

Indian opener Shubman Gill is all but confirmed to miss the upcoming Perth Test against Australia due to a thumb injury sustained during the ongoing series. The 24-year-old right-hander, who has been a vital part of India's batting lineup in recent years, suffered the injury while fielding in the second innings of the previous Test.

Gill’s injury has left a significant hole in India's top order, with the stylish batsman being one of the key performers in recent tours and one of the first-choice openers. Sources close to the Indian camp confirmed that the injury was serious enough to sideline him for the crucial third Test, set to begin at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

The injury occurred when Gill misjudged a ball while fielding at short leg, resulting in immediate discomfort to his thumb. While initial scans did not indicate any fractures, the Indian team management has opted for a precautionary approach, opting to rest Gill for the upcoming match. He is expected to undergo further tests to assess the extent of the injury, but it’s clear that recovery will take time.

The loss of Gill comes as a blow to India, as they were already grappling with a tough battle on Australian soil. The opening spot will likely be filled by either KL Rahul or the in-form Shubman’s replacement, with options like Prithvi Shaw also being considered. India has yet to announce the final squad for the Perth Test, but fans are eagerly awaiting to see how the team will adjust to the absence of one of their brightest young talents.

Gill’s absence also raises questions about his fitness heading into future international assignments. As of now, his recovery timeline remains unclear, and India will be hoping for a speedy recovery to bring him back for the remainder of the series.
